Drink Your Greens

When you have your meals outside, do you take the vegetables?

I don't! And i refrain from giving them to my children too, because i know that many vegetables outside are not washed prior to cooking.

And when you are at home, does everyone takes an adequate amount of vegetables?

Argh! I confess!! Though I really love eating vegetables, but in our home now, the only green vegetable that i cook is broccoli, and very recently, the lady fingers. I usually cooked all sorts of mushrooms, carrots, sweet corn, potatoes and the eggplant. I find vegetables very time consuming to wash and prepared. Having the mission of cooking and serving meals within a hour for my attention grabbing children, i made do with easy to prepare vegetables. :(

Very recently, Yakult has launched Yakult Health Foods in Singapore and I was invited to the debut launched!

Debut Launch of Yakult Health Food in Singapore, distributed by Abeille d'Or

A wide range of Yakult Health Food is now available in Singapore

It's interesting to know that Yakult Health Foods has powdered form of Aojiru, which means juice made of green vegetables! They have two types, the Maroyake Kale and Watashi no Aojiru (Barley young leaves).

We were given a walkthrough on the cultivation process of Yakult Health Foods' Aojiru

I was given a box of Maroyaka Kale to bring home to try and review. Maroyaka Kale, a rich and grassy green juice, is in powder form, made from premium Kale extract. It serves to provide Kale's nutrients as part of our vegetable intake.

If you do not know, Kale is a type of vegetable which is considered an original species of cabbage and broccoli. Extracted from Wikipedia:

"Kale is very high in beta carotene, vitamin K, vitamin C, and rich in calcium. Kale is a source of two carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin. Kale, as with broccoli and other brassicas, contains sulforaphane (particularly when chopped or minced), a chemical with potent anti-cancer properties. Boiling decreases the level of sulforaphane; however, steaming, microwaving, or stir frying does not result in significant loss. Along with other brassica vegetables, kale is also a source of indole-3-carbinol, a chemical which boosts DNA repair in cells and appears to block the growth of cancer cells. Kale has been found to contain a group of resins known as bile acid sequestrants, which have been shown to lower cholesterol and decrease absorption of dietary fat. Steaming significantly increases these bile acid binding properties."

A box of Maroyaka Kale comes with a 30 supply of Aojiru "Green Juice"

It's actually not easy to buy fresh and nice Kale in Singapore, and you need time to wash & prepare the fresh kale for cooking, which i seriously lacked of time. So, i like the idea of drinking it in a very conveniently packed powdered form!

As I am still breastfeeding, I had to check if Kale can be taken. It's always better to consult a doctor if you are unsure. After taking this drink for 3 days, i learnt a new benefit of taking Kale that little people knew - it actually boost milk supply! I am now taking it on alternate days to supplement additional nutrients to my body to support my lifestyle!

You only need 100ml of water to mix with the powder

I added it to Yakult drink too!

I find the taste of this green juice like taking raw vegetables. You can actually mix it into any beverage that you like, with recommended temperature of 80 deg celsius and below. One recommended recipe is to take mix the powder with lukewarm water, then add your desired amount of honey and lemon for a refreshing nice juice!

The complete range of Yakult Health Foods are available at Guardian Pharmacy outlets with prices starting from S$43.90 to S$119.90. The Maroyaka Kale is currently retailing at an introductory price of S$79.90 from now till 30th September 2014, after which the usual price of S$87.90 applies.
